Nigeria’s chief of army staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai today in Damboa, Borno State launched the posters of the second batch of the Boko Haram most wanted terrorists.

“We are also launching the second batch of Boko Haram most wanted terrorists on our list.
“The choice of Damboa is not by accident; it is deliberate knowing the centrality of Damboa in this operation,” he said.

“The vigilantes here will play important role in identifying these terrorists.
“We will send the posters across the country to ensure that those that have run away will be fish out.
“We call on the public to look at the posters carefully, identify and report any person they can recognise and report accordingly.

“We want to appreciate the support of the public, indeed all Nigerians, because we received tremendous support in the first set of 100 pictures and many of them had been identified and arrested.
“Although we are still pursing some of them we call on all Nigerians to support us by identifying these terrorists on these posters,” he urged.

The Nigerian Army announced on Saturday that it has re-opened all major highways linking Maiduguri, Borno state, with other parts of the country after being shut for about three years due to Boko Haram terrorist attacks.

Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), announced this at the launch of Army Combat Motor Bikes in Damboa, headquarters of Damboa local government area of the state.

Buratai said that the army will work towards securing the lives and properties of motorists plying the roads.
“From today the road – Maiduguri-Damboa and Damboa-Biu highway will be opened. The road is going to be entrusted into the hands of the Brigade Commander of the 25 Task Force Brigade,” he said.
Buratai added: “I do not want to hear any case of attack on innocent civilians or motorists on the road henceforth.
“Our troops will be on alert 24 hours to ensure that the road is kept open.’’

He said that the Nigerian Army had also re-opened other highways, including the Maiduguri-Bama, the Maiduguri-Mafa-Dikwa-Gamboru/Ngala roads, among others.

“All other major roads have been re-opened to motorists in the state. We are deliberate in ensuring that the roads are opened and the people that ply the roads and indeed the residents are safe.

“Those who left should come back, I know that the Borno State Government is doing something and the Federal Government is doing something too on the issue,” Buratai said.
He explained that the launch of the Motor Bikes was aimed at beefing up security on the highways to prevent attacks on innocent persons.

“I am here to formally launch the Motor Bike Battalion of the Nigerian Army, we see it as a first multiplier to the fight against the Boko Haram terrorists.
“We intend to use the Motor Bikes effectively to ensure that our roads are kept safe and the terrorists are pursued anywhere they go,” Buratai said.

He added that the Motor Bikes were fitted with fire power and communication gadget for effectiveness.
“This is a first multiplier with added fire power with the speed as well as the communication that is being added to the bikes.

“The reach of these Motor Bikes will be a very important element in ensuring that our troops maintain the initiatives and continue the exploit what they have so far achieved,” Buratai said.
“So as the roads are re-opened now people should be able to move freely and we will do our job to ensure that they are secured.”

Mugabe attacks West over gays at obscene birthday bash

Mugabe at his lavish birthday bash
Mugabe at his lavish birthday bash

President Robert Mugabe marked his 92nd birthday at a nearly $1 million party organised by supporters in a drought-stricken area on Saturday, drawing criticism from opponents who said the celebrations were an affront to ordinary Zimbabweans.

Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s only leader since its independence from Britain in 1980, said no-one would starve as a result of a drought which has left three million people in need and prompted the declaration of a state of disaster in most rural areas.

But in a characteristic gibe at Western countries, he said Zimbabwe would not accept aid if it came with conditions that the country should accept gay rights.

“If aid, as I understand, is to be given on the basis that we accept the principle of gay marriages, then let that aid stay were it is,” Mugabe said during an hour-long speech.

“We don’t want it. It is rotten aid, filthy aid and we won’t have anything to do with it.”
Zimbabwe has appealed for nearly $1.6 billion to help pay for grain and other food, but no aid organisation is known to have attached such a condition to assistance.

Africa’s oldest leader, Mugabe turned 92 on Feb. 21 and shows no intention of stepping down, much to the frustration of feuding members of his ruling ZANU-PF party who have long been trying to position themselves for his succession.

Mugabe thanked the ZANU-PF youth wing and thousands of party supporters for organising the $800,000 party. Ninety-two balloons were released and he listened to poetry readings, songs and chants hailing him as an African icon and a visionary.

He cut a giant cake made to look like the ancient ruins for which Zimbabwe is named. School children, foreign diplomats, government ministers and security chiefs were also present.

BIRTHDAY CAKE

Mugabe’s lavish birthday parties have become an annual pilgrimage for loyalists and those seeking favours from the veteran leader, but this year’s celebration in the drought-battered Masvingo province proved particularly controversial.

In Masvingo, 75 percent of the staple maize crop was destroyed by the parched conditions, making it the hardest-hit in the southern African nation in the worst drought since the early 1990s.

“The money that is being budgeted for this ill-conceived birthday bash should actually be used to import maize to avert the impending starvation in Masvingo province and other parts of the country,” Obert Gutu, a spokesman for the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), said in a statement.

Critics blame Mugabe for many of the problems facing the country. They say his policies, including the seizures and redistribution of white-owned commercial farms, drove one of Africa’s most promising economies into nearly a decade of deep recession until 2008 that cut its output almost in half.

“The British and the Americans in their cunning way as usual have also utilised such opportunities to offer huge sums of money to individuals both within and outside the party so as to cause factionalism,” Mugabe said.

Tanzania: Magufuli threatens to sack ministers over assets form

President John Magufuli: to sack ministers who fail to declare assets
President John Magufuli: to sack ministers who fail to declare assets

Tanzanian President John Magufuli has threatened to sack cabinet ministers who do not declare their assets or fail to sign an integrity pledge on Saturday, part of his anti-corruption drive.
Magufuli launched several initiatives to clamp down on corruption since winning an election in November.
Businesses have long said corruption was a major obstacle to working in the east African nation and a deterrent to investment. Tanzania is ranked 117th out of 168 countries in Transparency International’s 2015 corruption perception index where No. 1 is least corrupt.

“The president’s instructions that all ministers who were yet to declare their assets and liabilities should do so before 6pm (on Saturday) has been implemented,” the prime minister’s office said in a statement. It said those who did not would be fired.

Earlier this week, a body that monitors civil servants said four senior ministers and one junior minister had yet to sign.

Cabinet ministers and other public officials are required by law to declare their assets and liabilities at the country’s ethics secretariat by Dec. 31 each year, but in the past this has often been ignored. The integrity pledge is new.

Magufuli, who took office late last year, has pledged to root out corruption and government inefficiency. He has sacked several senior officials, including the head of the government’s anti-graft body, the chief taxman, a senior rail official and the head of the country’s port authority.

Tanzania is one of Africa’s biggest per capita aid recipients, but payments have often been delayed because donors said they were concerned about corruption, poor governance and the slow pace of reforms.
In 2014, a group of donors withheld nearly $500 million in budget support to Tanzania over corruption allegations in the energy industry after a scandal led to the resignations of three cabinet ministers.

Osinbajo: No Naira devaluation; evil day postponed, says ex-CBN gov

VP Yemi Osinbajo
VP Yemi Osinbajo

The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on Saturday reaffirmed the position of the Federal Government that the country’s currency would not be devalued in spite of pressures to act otherwise.

But a former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr Joseph Sanusi, replied that delaying the devaluation was akin to postponing the evil day.

The divergent positions were taken at a town hall meeting that the Vice President held with his co-tenants in the Victoria Garden City (VGC) on the Lekki-Epe axis of Lagos.

At the widely attended and thought provoking event, Osinbajo insisted that devaluation was not on the table, adding “that is the position of government’’.

According to him, the CBN will operate in line with the speech delivered by President Muhammadu Buhari, after he was elected to come up with flexible exchange rate to be supported by strong monetary policies.
He said that the foreign exchange policy of government was to stop unnecessary consumption of imported goods and promote local manufacturing.

Osinbajo also said that government met a falling revenue profile in May 2015, which was down by about 70 per cent compared to the same period of the preceding year.

He also said that in spite of the high cost of about $22 to produce a barrel of crude oil now selling at about $33 dollars, no fewer than 38 per cent of the foreign reserve was spent on importing petroleum products.

Bola Tinubu: Nigeria needs more than patch-patch change

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu,
                       Asiwaju Bola Tinubu,

The national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu defined today the great task ahead to navigate Nigeria out its present economic quagmire, declaring that what the nation needs is a fundamental departure from the way we have been doing business.
“Nigeria needs some fundamental restructuring both politically and economically. Not the constant tinkering and patch-patch we often resort to. We must therefore begin with fundamentally restructuring the economy if we are to rid ourselves of joblessness”, he said.

He spoke in Abuja today at a ceremony at University of Abuja where he was awarded a doctorate degree in Business Administration. Former vice-president Dr. Alex Ekwueme and two former chief justices of Nigeria, Justice Idris Kutigi and Justice Maryam Aloma Mukhtar were also honoured with doctorate degrees.
Tinubu spoke on behalf of other honorees and devoted his speech on the problems besetting the nation and how to steer it out of the problems.

“Our nation faces many challenges, some imposed on us by forces beyond our control, some self inflicted due to the errant ways of past leadership and governance.

“Nigeria stands at the threshold of sober decision. The ways in which we have grown accustomed to running this nation suddenly no longer suffice. If we are to continue as we have done over the years that malpractice will deliver us into the vice grip of national failure. That which we used to do and laugh at ourselves for our errant ways is no longer a joking matter. It is now fatal.
“We must reform and do so quickly and with alertness to the severity of the circumstances mounting about us.

“While confronting multiple major challenges. I believe this government has the chance and the mission to better our society and forge a new model for our political economy. We have demonstrated the courage and determination to change a non-performing government through a democratic election. This electoral success has brought new chaallenges. These challenges are numerous and we must brace up and confront them.
“We dare not rest on the satisfaction of electoral victory alone. We must continue our strive toward democratic governance that can usher in a progressive era of broad prosperity, development, democracy and human dignity for our people. This is our preoccupation. Our desire.

“If you asked me to describe the state of the nation I would say it is a difficult but encouraging one, we are emerging from a period of great moral uncertainty where vice and virtue were too often indistinguishable and too often confused, one for the other.

“We must ask- are we hopeless due to the sordid nature of the past 16 years? No. Are the challenges left behind too much to surmount? No.

“Even though the nation before stood half in the light of progress and half in the darkness of injustice, there is much hope because we now have a government committed to a new era of discipline and prosperity. The journey we have embarked upon will not be easy. It requires us all to make sacrifices and persevere until we achieve…

“Agriculture remains a key pillar in our development. We must return to the days when Nigeria had surplus and exported food. Now we import too much food for our own good and security.
Our small farmers sink under the reality of rising costs and too little income from the crops they raise. Moreover, we annually lose arable land to desert encroachment.

“I believe the current administration under President Buhari has set its priorities right in this regard. Our farmers will once be proud again. We believe farmers need to earn a sufficient enough income that will bring prosperity back to their families. They must be encouraged and supported.

“A vibrant agriculture sector will produce enough food for domestic consumption and for export, thus earning foreign exchange as it did decades ago. It will also create and maintain jobs.

“We must also create jobs for our growing urban populations. We must create production to meet the rapidly expanding population. This means changing the oil export model upon which our economy has for too long been based. This means shifting to were human labor and ingenuity now feature as the catalyst of economic development and wealth creation. This means the creation of industries. This means government must embark on fiscal policies and programs that encourage industrial development and employment to create the openings and opportunities that shall employ many of you seated here and many others like you.

“As a progressive government we have as one of our top priorities the lifting of 20 per cent of Nigerians out of poverty within the first four years of our administration. To happen, the state must be a catalyst for job creation and economic development that touches all the people not just a narrow growth that benefits a small number.

“We shall do this by implementing a national industrial policy linked to a national infrastructural plan and a national employment strategy.

“Before our children can dream of a university education they must first enjoy the foundational education of primary school. Our position is that we make a special effort to draw all children to school, particularly the poor. We cannot afford to allow poverty to keep children out of the classroom. If so we are suborning a life of ignorance and poverty for millions of our young ones.

“This progressive government is committed to providing all school-age children one free meal daily. This seems a simple thing. But it is also wise and prudent. A hungry student does not learn. If the child is too hungry too often, he stops attending school altogether.

“By this program, students will more eagerly attend because their stomachs as well as their minds shall be fed. Parents will encourage children to attend because this will take the children off the streets while also alleviating pressure on the family to feed the children.

This current leadership will anchor its efforts to re-build Nigeria on massive industrialization and the re-structuring of the economy to allow for growth. Then, will hope be rekindled for millions of our people and a country of great potentials and possibilities will emerge.”

LASU: Convocation certificate fee N5K not N20k

The Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, on Friday reiterated that the fee for the collection of the university’s certificates remains N5,000 as against the purported N20,000 being spread by some faceless people.

‎The University said this in its official bulletin obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
It said the university management had not increased the certificate collection fee and was not considering such increment.

The bulletin said such false information was a rumour and be should discountenanced.
“The university management wishes to state categorically that the payment for the collection of the LASU certificate remains N5, 000 only and had not been increased to N20, 000.

“There is no iota of truth in such malicious, false, unfounded and baseless rumour which has gained prominence on various social media platforms and aimed at bringing the name of the university into disrepute‎.
“It is just a figment of imagination of the faceless people behind the rumour,’’ it said.

The bulletin urged the university community and the general public to rely on information from the university management, disseminated through the University’s official bulletin and its website, www.lasu.edu.ng.

Love affair: How Funke Akindele, JJC became hot item

Funke and JJC
Funke and JJC

Early January 2016, the rumour mill was agog with the news that Nollywood star actress, Funke Akindele and United Kingdom-based Nigerian singer and producer, Abdul Rasheed Bello popularly known as JJC Skillz, were reportedly dating.

According to the reports, smitten Funke had practically moved in to JJC’s Prime Water Garden home in Ikate, Lekki, Lagos as his live-in-lover, after spending more time with the musician in his London base.

But while the romance rumours continue to swirl around, both Funke and JJC kept sealed lips. However, friends close to the duo tactically confirmed that the two are in love but have decided to make it a very private affair.
But days ago, the rumour became stronger with JJC said to have proposed to the actress renowned for her stellar role as Jenifa in a movie of same title.

In between the whispers of romance, the two have been seen working together on different projects.

While JJC has been helping out as director on Funke’s Jenifa Diary, a TV sitcom series, the actress in turn plays the lead, mimicking ‘Olajumoke Bread Seller’ in the upcoming video of JJC’s new song, Ada.

While some have suggested that all the engagement tales could be a publicity stunt, but going by the activities of the two with an exchange of lovey dovey messages on Twitter and Instagram, many could feel a true love tango between JJC and Funke.

Some weeks back, JJC, via his Instagram account, @jjcskillz, had made a shout out to his nephews: “My cute nephews singing along to #forgetmenot by @jjcskillz ft @officialpraiz made my Christmas day. Thank you to my big brother for the video @sbellophotos the man that inspired my whole musical journey. Godblessyou.

Funke, touched by the message, had clicked a like button and responded: “My cuties. God bless them all. May the Lord never forget us. Well done boo. Always proud of u kisses. FABB.”
And JJC, the loverboy acknowledged: “@funkejenifaakindele thanks sweetheart.

Also, some have equally noticed that the duo have been hanging out closely both in Nigeria and the UK.
During Funke’s 39th exclusive birthday party held at Cokobar in London last year, JJC was at the party and was very active.
They also both attended Abi and Tunde’s wedding in London last year.

Meanwhile, effort by our correspondent to confirm the story from the couple proved abortive. A1 repeated calls and SMS message sent to Funke’s PR Reps, Biodun Kupoluyi, remain unanswered.

Funke, who will be 40 this year, is a Christian. She has remained single after separating from her husband,

Kehinde Oloyede in 2013 under very controversial circumstances.
Like Funke’s estranged husband, Kenny, her new lover, JJC is also a serial monogamist.

JJC, who hailed from Kano State, has been married before. He was married to his first wife, the mother of his first child in 1995. They both have a daughter, Tamira Bello born in 1996. The woman, who has always lived in the UK, has remarried.

JJC also has two other children from two other women.
Many are waiting with bated breath for the couple to make an official confirmation of their relationship.

Cameroon’s army killed 92 members of Islamist militant group Boko Haram and freed 850 villagers in a joint operation with Nigerian forces, the government of Cameroon said on Friday.
The operation in the Nigerian village of Kumshe, close to the border with Cameroon, was conducted under the auspices of a multinational force fighting Boko Haram, the statement from Communications Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary said.

“Two Cameroonian soldiers were killed (during the operation) by an accidental mine explosion. Five other soldiers were wounded,” Bakary said, adding that the army captured weapons and ammunition and found a centre for production of homemade mines.

Spokesman of the Nigerian army, Colonel Sani Usman confirmed the operation. He however did not give a toll of Boko Haram militants killed.

Usman said on Feb. 23, troops of 21 Brigade in conjunction with troops of MNJTF on clearance operations at Kumshe general area rescued 250 persons, mainly women and children.

Boko Haram seeking to carve out an emirate in northeastern Nigeria, has staged a campaign of suicide and other attacks in Cameroon, Chad and Niger over the past year, including killing as many as 1,000 in Cameroon.

The U.S. military calls Boko Harm the most violent extremist group in the world. The group gained global notoriety for kidnapping more than 200 schoolgirls in Nigeria in 2014 and is thought to have killed over 15,000 people over six years.

Niger: Issoufou faces run-off against jailed rival Amadou

Hama Amadou: to run again against Issoufou

At full tally of the votes won in the 21 February presidential election in Niger, incumbent President Mahamadou Issoufou won 48.4 percent of the vote, falling short of an outright majority.

A run-off will now be conducted between him and jailed opposition leader Hama Amadou, according to provisional results on Friday.

Amadou, a former prime minister who came second with 17.8 percent, has been in prison since November on charges relating to a baby-trafficking scandal. He says he is innocent and a victim of political repression.
A coalition of four parties agreed before the election to back the candidate that came second in a bid to defeat Issoufou. Those parties gained a cumulative vote of around 38 percent.

Issoufou is bidding for a second term and has vowed to tackle poverty and improve security in the West African country that is one of the poorest in the world.

Niger also faces a threat from Nigeria-based Islamist militant group Boko Haram, which has staged a series of cross-border attacks in the southeastern Diffa region, forcing the government to impose a state of emergency there.

Turnout in the election was nearly 67 percent, according to the National Electoral Commission.

Kenya lost 200 soldiers to Al Shabaab: Somalia leader

Kenyan troops in Somalia
Kenyan troops in Somalia

As many as 200 soldiers were killed in an attack on a Kenyan military camp in Somalia by al Shabaab Islamists last month, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud told a television station. Kenya however has rejected the figure, without disclosing its own tally of the dead.

Kenyan authorities have refused to give a death toll following the Jan. 15 raid, which targeted troops working under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) near the southern Somali town of El Adde.

Newspaper pictures of coffins draped with Kenyan flags bringing back dead soldiers after the attack increased the disquiet from ordinary Kenyans and the opposition alike over Kenya’s continued presence in Somalia.

Al Shabaab later distributed photos purporting to show the bodies of dozens of Kenyan soldiers, many apparently shot in the head.

“When about 200 soldiers who came to help your country are killed in one morning, it is not something trivial,” Mohamud told Somali Cable TV, a privately owned station. The interview was posted on YouTube on Thursday.

“We have been winning for years and months but that El Adde battle, we were defeated. Yes, in war, sometimes something that you do not like happens to you,” he said.

Kenya sent soldiers into Somalia in 2011 after raids in the border region and kidnappings that threatened the tourism industry in the region’s biggest economy and wider regional destabilisation. It later joined the AMISOM operation.

Al Shabaab’s attacks in Kenya have included a raid by gunmen on the upscale Westgate shopping mall in 2013 and a university in Garissa in 2015. Hundreds of people have been killed in al Shabaab attacks in the past two years.

Kenya Defence Forces spokesman, Colonel David Obonyo, denied the number given by the Somali president and questioned the source of the information.

“It is not true. This information never came from us or anyone in the government of Kenya,” he told Reuters.
The al Qaeda-aligned militants have been driven out of major strongholds in Somalia by AMISOM and Somali army offensives, but the group still controls some rural areas and often launches guerrilla-style assaults and bomb attacks.

Al Shabaab, which has links to al Qaeda and seeks to overthrow Somalia’s Western-backed government, initially said it had killed more than 100 soldiers in the attack.

The group, which is also seeking to drive the AU force out of Somalia, often says its attacks against Kenyan targets are retaliation for its participation in AMISOM, which also includes Uganda and Burundi.

A Chinese airplane was forced to return to its port of origin after a rat was found to have hitched a ride, and was scuttling about the cabin, Loong Air confirmed on Friday.

The GJ8823 plane left Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, at 7:07 a.m. and was headed for Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province, before the rat was discovered.

Rats are infamous for chewing up electric wire, a huge safety issue on an airplane as they could sabotage the flight control system.

They could have gotten into the plane by following catering vans and other cargoes, sources said.
Airline employees fumigated and disinfected the plane, the airliner said.

Loong Air is a budget airline registered in Hangzhou. It plies more than 50 domestic routes in the country.

Nigerian Navy acquires 25 locally made boats for operations

Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas

Towards stepping up its fight against crude oil theft, sea piracy and other maritime crimes, the Nigerian Navy has procured and launched 25 locally made security patrol boats. The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas said on Thursday in Port Harcourt that the boats which are less expensive than imported ones, boast the necessary features suitable for military operations.

According to the Chief of Naval Staff, the cost of production of a unit of the boats is less than half the cost of producing similar boats from overseas. The Nigerian Navy decided to look inwards by contracting local ship building vendors for the provision of some of her defence articles due to the current serious economic downturn, and the decision has helped in conserving foreign exchange.

The indigenous manufacturers of the boats have also been given the opportunity to prove themselves while garnering experience in the process. Vice Admiral Ibas says the boats would help the Navy to effectively monitor the creeks and further protect the maritime space, and consequently those doing legitimate business from harassment by criminal elements.

The boats are 8.2 metres in length, with speed of about 40 knots. Each of the boats also has two gun mounts, a radar system that can detect shallow waters and two 250 horsepower outboard engines. Apart from having 16 to 18 hours of endurance to their credit, the boats are also fitted with outboard engines and life rafts.

Nyesom Wike, the Rivers State governor has also pledged that the state is ready to support the Nigerian Navy in its efforts at combating criminal activities in the maritime space. ‘’We will partner with the security agencies and will not relent in ensuring that we provide all the necessary logistics for the patrol boats,” Wike assured the Naval Chief. The governor has demanded for a list of the Navy’s requests to underline the state’s commitment.

In the next two months, the Navy is expected to take delivery of 50 more security patrol boats with more improved features and anti-ballistic protection, towards ensuring that the nation’s waters are saturated with patrol boats for improved security.

Chadian soldier kills commander, colleague in Mali

A Chadian UN peacekeeper in Mali on Thursday killed two colleagues, including his commander, at a camp in the northeastern region of Kidal, UN sources say.

A UN security source said a “mutinous” peacekeeper shot the commander of his contingent and another soldier — who are both Chadian.

Spokesman for the UN Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), Olivier Salgado, confirmed the deaths of the two peacekeepers on the phone.

No explanation has been given for the shooting, but it is said to have followed an argument.
The shooter has been arrested and investigations launched, Salgado said.

The incident occurred at a time when tens of Chadian peacekeepers were said to be “unhappy” with their working and living conditions in northern Mali, MINUSMA security sources revealed.
Last year, a Chadian contingent under MINUSMA abandoned its positions in northern Mali to demand salary arrears.

Chad contributes 1,151 soldiers and police officers to the 11,700-strong MINUSMA, making them the third largest group in the mission after Burkina Faso, 1,742 and Bangladesh, 1,725.
MINUSMA was deployed to northern Mali in July 2013.

Breaking News: Reverend King to die by hanging for murder

Reverend King: to die by hanging
Reverend King: to die by hanging

Rev. Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, a.k.a Reverend King will be hanged for murder, the  Supreme Court affirmed today, ending a ten year legal war to upturn the verdict of a Lagos High court.

King, General Overseer of the Christian Praying Assembly in Lagos, had challenged the judgment of the Lagos High Court and the Appeal court, which affirmed his  sentencing to death by hanging over the brutal killing of a member of the church, Ann Uzoh.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Sylvester Nguta, held that the convict’s appeal lacked merit.
“The ‎facts of the case could have been lifted from horror film and the court cannot but resolve all the 12 issues raised in this appeal against Ezeugo.

“This appeal has no merit. The judgment of the Court of Appeal is hereby affirmed.
“The prison sentence that was earlier handed based on the other five-count charge is no longer relevant in view of the death sentence passed on him.

“The appellant, in his defence, claimed that the victims sustained the various injuries from an exploded generator within the church’s premises but failed to prove this defence,” Nguta said.

Ezeugo was arraigned on Sept. 26, 2006, on a six-count charge of attempted murder and murder.
The charge against him was at the instance of the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions over the alleged death of Uzo and wilful injuries brought on five others.

The appellant was on Jan. 11, 2007, convicted and sentenced to death by hanging for the alleged offences.
The prosecution had argued during the trial, that the convict poured petrol on the deceased.

He pleaded not guilty to the allegation but was sentenced to death by the then Justice Joseph Oyewole of Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, on January 11, 2007 for the murder of Ann Uzoh.
Justice Oyewole is now a judge of Appeal Court sitting in the Calabar division.

The Lagos State Government had said that the convict poured petrol on the deceased and five other persons and that Uzoh died on August 2, 2006; 11 days after the act was perpetrated on her.
Dissatisfied, Ezeugo challenged the verdict before the Court of Appeal in Lagos, but the appeal was thrown out.

FIFA presidency: Sheikh Salman or Gianni Infantino?

Crucial election to choose Blatter ' s successor today
Crucial election to choose Blatter ‘ s successor today

The five men vying for the leadership of world soccer’s scandal-hit governing body made their final pitches on Thursday in a contest that could hinge on who secures the bulk of Africa’s 54 votes.
Delegates from more than 200 countries will elect a new president on Friday to succeed Sepp Blatter of Switzerland, two days after Blatter and European soccer chief Michel Platini lost their appeals against bans for ethics violations.

Whoever takes over from Blatter, who ran FIFA for 17 years like a globe-trotting head of state, will inherit a very different job with a focus on crisis management, after dozens of international soccer officials were indicted in the United States last year for racketeering, money-laundering and bribery.

African countries make up more than a quarter of the 207 football associations eligible to vote. On the final day of campaigning, there were sharply conflicting versions of how they would cast their ballots.

While the vice-president of their continental federation said virtually all would back Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa of Bahrain, several delegates told Reuters the African vote could be split.

Switzerland’s Gianni Infantino has said he is confident of winning more than half the African votes, while Liberian soccer chief Musa Bility predicted 27 of them would go to Jordan’s Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein.

“The world is waiting and watching – this is the biggest milestone in the history of FIFA. It will decide if FIFA goes ahead as we want or if it spirals down,” Prince Ali told delegates.

South Africa’s Tokyo Sexwale described FIFA as “broken” and a damaged brand, though he also referred to some of those felled in the scandal as “friends we have lost”.

Infantino repeated his promise to offer each of FIFA’s members $5 million to invest in the sport over four years, more than doubling the $2.05 million each federation got from 2011-14. He said this could be achieved “easily” by tackling the cost structure of FIFA.

Bahrain’s Salman, who along with Infantino is seen as a front-runner, was more cautious, speaking of a ‘realistic’ increase in funding.

“For me, if the numbers are right, we can increase – but I am not ready to mortgage FIFA’s future in winning an election.”

French outsider Jerome Champagne took a shot at Infantino’s globe-trotting campaign by saying the election had been “unbalanced”.

“I did not have a private jet to visit you, take a photo and then tweet and say I have got the endorsement,” he said to laughter from delegates.

CORRUPTION PROBES The two favourites were both upbeat.

“I am feeling good and very positive. The support I am receiving fills me with confidence,” Infantino told Reuters in an email while travelling between meetings.

A spokesman for his Bahraini rival said: “Sheikh Salman is very confident about tomorrow’s vote.”
FIFA was plunged into turmoil by the corruption scandal that broke last year, beginning with a dawn raid to arrest delegates at a Swiss luxury hotel.

Criminal investigations led by the United States and Switzerland have spanned dozens of countries, focusing largely on the awarding of lucrative broadcast and marketing rights to the world’s most popular sport. They are also examining the process by which FIFA awarded the next two World Cups to Russia and Qatar.

Acting FIFA president Issa Hayatou appealed to FIFA members in what he called one of the most important weeks in the history of global football, urging them to support a package of reforms on governance. These include introducing term limits for top officials and requiring them to disclose their earnings.

“I urge each of you to support the reforms in full here this week, and then to implement them to their entirety at home,” Hayatou said in an address aimed at the six confederations that run soccer around the world.
“This will send a strong message that we have listened and that we are taking the action necessary to give football the foundation, and protection, it needs for the future.”

Reverend King to die or not? : Supreme Court decides today

Reverend King: Final judgment today
Reverend King: Final judgment today

The Supreme Court  will give the final word today whether Rev. Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, a.k.a Reverend King  should be hanged for murder or whether he should spend some few years more in jail.
King, General Overseer of the Christian Praying Assembly in Lagos, is challenging the judgment of a Lagos High Court sentencing him to death by hanging.

The apex court presided over by Justice Walter Onoghen adjourned till today to give  judgment after listening to  arguments from counsel to prosecution and defence in the matter.

Lagos State Attorney general and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, who appeared before the Supreme Court alongside Mrs. Idowu Alakija, the Director of Public Prosecution  and other Senior Counsel in the State, urged the court to dismiss the appeal and uphold the judgment of the lower courts.

Ezeugo was arraigned on September 26, 2006 on a six-count charge of attempted murder and murder.
He pleaded not guilty to the allegation but was sentenced to death by the then Justice Joseph Oyewole of Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, on January 11, 2007 for the murder of one of his church members, Ann Uzoh.
Justice Oyewole is now a judge of Appeal Court sitting in the Calabar division.
The Lagos State Government had said that the convict poured petrol on the deceased and five other persons and that Uzoh died on August 2, 2006; 11 days after the act was perpetrated on her.
Ezeugo was convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for the attempted murder and death by hanging for the offence of murder.

Dissatisfied, Ezeugo challenged the verdict before the Court of Appeal in Lagos, but the appeal was thrown out.

“I hereby rule that the prosecution effectively discharged the burden of proof on it. This appeal is devoid of any basis and accordingly fails.

“The judgment of the High Court is hereby affirmed, and the conviction imposed on the appellant, (which is death by hanging) is also affirmed,” Justice Fatimo Akinbami who read the judgement held. The two other members of the panel of Justices, Amina Augie and Ibrahim Saulawa concurred with the lead judgement.
Again, Ezeugo not being satisfied with the verdict, approached the Supreme Court, and urged that the judgment be upturned.

The apex court has now fixed the final  judgment for today.
