The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has
commended the Anambra State government on its policy on Agriculture.
IFAD made the commendation through its President, Dr. Kanayo Nwanze, who visited the state recently.
Dr Nwanze had declared that with what was on ground the state has the potential of assisting Nigeria meet her rice needs.
The IFAD president who spoke at Awka, the state capital when he paid a courtesy visit to the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Afam Mbanefo expressed happiness at the efforts being made by the state government in putting agriculture in its priority list.
He also praised the state for being one of the few states that pay their counterpart funds regularly.
Nwanze noted that besides rice, Nigeria can build her economy on cassava both as food crop and for industrial uses.
He said: “Anambra is not known for so much for agriculture as it is for its services and other commercial activities, but recognition of the role of agriculture particularly of rice production and cassava in our national development and emphasis that it has been given is very impressive.
“I think Nigeria’s potential is very huge, in the area of rice we consume about six million tons of rice annually, we produce less than three million tons so we have potential for three million, but beyond that we have potential for producing 10 million tons of rice.
“So, Hon. Commissioner you have a crop here and a potential not only feeding Nigeria but also feeding the rest of West Africa.
“…Nigeria can build her economy on cassava, not on oil. Cassava is not only a food crop for us human beings, for garri, for floor, for chips and the rest, it’s not only a crop that can feed animals but also has industrial uses, for producing bio-fuel, for producing ethanol, for producing industrial starch etc.
“We are the widest producer of cassava in the world, 200 million tons a year, but that is even less than 15 per cent of its potentials so we can even double that and we have no reason to be importing cassava products from Malaysia or Asian country.”
Responding the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Afam Mbanefo commended IFAD for selecting Anambra as one of the six states for the programme in Nigeria, assuring of the readiness of the state government to pay its counterpart funds to ensure the success of the programme.
He said that the government has set up land committees in the rice producing areas and developed farmers’ data base to enable the state key properly into the activities of IFAD.
The State Programme Coordinator of IFAD, Mr. Nnamdi Agwuncha presented the vision of the Anambra State Value Chain Development Programme for the rice processing clusters in the state to the President and took him and his entourage, including the country programme manager of IFAD, Dr. AtsukoToda to the rice processing clusters at Omor and Anaku rice producing areas in the state
